56th INTERNATIONAL MENDELEYEV CHEMICAL OLYMPIAD

56th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad is organizing on May 9-16 this year by the Agency for Presidential Educational Institutions, Moscow State University named after M.V.Lomonosov and “Eurokhim” company.

The Olympiad is attending by the representatives of about 20 countries, including Austria, the UAE, Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Hungary, Croatia, Syria, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Israel, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

At this year’s Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad, about 100 talented pupils from 16 countries are competing.

The Olympics consist of 3 main stages:

Stage I : Stage of solving 8 theoretical problems in chemistry.

Stage II : This stage is solving 15 theoretical problems in chemistry, in which the participant chooses 5 out of 15 theoretical problems by themselves.

Phase III : 5 practical laboratories in chemistry.

The final results collected by the participants will be summarized and the winners of the Olympiad will be determined on the basis of the overall result.

10% of the total participants will be awarded gold, 20% silver and 30% bronze medals.

The Uzbek national team consists of 12 pupils. Seven of them are studying at a specialized school named after Abu Ali ibn Sina under the Agency for Presidential Educational Institutions.

The history of Olympiad

The International Mendeleev Olympiad in Chemistry for schoolchildren is one of the largest competitions for high school students in the world, bringing together winners of national Olympiads from different countries. This is the only science Olympiad equated by UNESCO to the International Olympiad for schoolchildren in chemistry.

The importance of this Olympiad was also emphasized at the International Conference on the Further Development of the Chemistry Olympiads (Riga, Latvia, January 9-10, 2004).

In 1997, the Olympiad was held for the first time in a country outside of Russia. Bulgaria, Macedonia and Romania have participated in the International Mendeleev Olympiad since 2004, and Hungary, Turkey and Saudi Arabia since 2012. In 2016 , teams from Israel, Mongolia and Nigeria participated in the Olympiad for the first time. In 2019, the participation of 30 countries was approved, including Ukraine, Georgia, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Austria and China. In 2022, a team of Bangladeshi schoolchildren become to participate for the first time.

According to international experts, the tasks of the International Mendeleev Olympiad are difficult for students, but at the same time interesting. The International Mendeleev Olympiad is slightly different from other national chemistry Olympiads.

The tasks of the International Mendeleev Olympiad are prepared by a permanent methodological commission consisting of leading scientists and chemistry teachers from the participating countries. The official languages of the International Mendeleev Olympiad are Russian and English. At the request of team leaders, assignments can be translated into the participant’s native language.

In 2022, the 56th International Mendeleev Olympiad was hosted by the Agency for Presidential Educational Institutions of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
